Mercedes, perché a Spa è tornato il porpoising (e perché si lamentano solo loro)

La lista degli sconfitti di Spa conta anche la Mercedes che è tornata a soffrire di porpoising: “Frustrante, andare in ferie così”, le parole di Toto Wolff.
È un problema che sembrava risolto e dimenticato per sempre – perché la Fia dopo l’attuazione delle prime misure d’emergenza, quest’anno è intervenuta definitivamente sulle altezze da terra e sulla posizione del diffusore – e che invece si è riproposto al Gran Premio del Belgio. In misura notevole, al punto che le Mercedes a differenza delle altre non potevano prendere Blanchimont in pieno. Alla fine, Hamilton nelle interviste diceva:
We had big bouncing this weekend, so we are back to the bouncing like we had last year. At the end I was keeping the Ferrari within a few seconds but I couldn’t get any closer to that battle.
Secondo Russell, pativano i saltellamenti anche altre squadre, “comunque, nessuno come noi”. Ma questo è un punto su cui Gary Anderson – ex Jordan e Jaguar – nell’analisi per il Telegraph, giustamente notava:
They all seem to have accepted that bouncing will be there at certain points and they just react to it and know what to do. I am not sure whether Mercedes keep talking about it because they want the FIA to step in and change the regulations.
Ad ogni modo, al di là delle stretegie politiche dietro certe dichiarazioni, sembra che il porposing della W14 non sia da ricondurre alle novità meccaniche e aerodinamiche che debuttavano a Spa. Piuttosto, a una questione di assetto specifico, in un weekend in cui si è tenuta una sola sessione di prove libere, bagnata tra l’altro. Lo sosteneva Mike Elliott, il direttore tecnico:
Obviously it was a wet race weekend, a weekend where we have no dry running up until the point we were actually racing. We’ll also take a really good look at the upgrade kit and make sure we’ve not introduced bouncing with that. But at the moment our belief is it’s probably a result of set-up or the circuit itself.
