È stata più lunga del previsto, ma alla fine Daniel Ricciardo – anzi, Riccardo, come gli hanno scritto sul box, direttamente secondo la pronuncia australianizzata e americanizzata, e come del resto “mi hanno sempre chiamato in famiglia” – s’è ripreso l’Alpha Tauri:
We were aware what bone broke, they seemed fairly okay with that bone in terms of it’s a relatively easy one to fix. But then when we got the surgery done in Spain and we got further checks done, the break was a lot worse than it first seemed, so I think that’s what took a lot longer and probably made it a little more painful for myself.
Torna in pista ad Austin dopo un mese e mezzo di stop per la frattura al metacarpo della mano sinistra nell’incidente nella seconda sessione di prove libere a Zandvoort. C’era l’ipotesi di rientrare in Qatar, “ma è stato giusto aspettare – parole di Horner – perché nelle condizioni che si sono verificate sarebbe stato impegnativo”:
I tried it out in the week before Qatar, but I didn’t feel it was at full potential, so I spent the rest of that week in the UK, spending more time in the sim, and got to a point where I felt ready to go.
My overall fitness is fine as I kept training as much as I could, although I obviously couldn’t do much with my left hand or arm for a while.
Nel frattempo il mercato s’è mosso, Ricciardo ha già in tasca il rinnovo per il 2024, ma resta solida la prospettiva che la Red Bull possa offrirgli il posto di Perez nella squadra madre. Dove ritroverebbe Verstappen, con il quale non finì benissimo:
I think it’d be very different. Just from where we are both at in our careers. I always stand by saying I don’t regret anything. Do I believe I can still win races? Absolutely. Will I be a world champion one day? I would love to say yes but I honestly don’t know.
